Food and Your Mood

Have you ever made the connection here?

Truthfully I never did until I started my Holistic Nutrition Coach course. Then it became glaringly obvious. #cantunlearnit

What you put in your mouth has a direct impact on your emotions and how you feel. Nutritional deficiencies, food sensitivities, blood sugar imbalances, stimulants (caffeine), all affect biochemistry and contribute to mood fluctuations.

The big one today is food additives. Additives in processed foods can easily generate adverse chemical reactions within the body and drastically affect mood and behavior in many kiddos and adults.

Some of these toxins are designed to deliver messages to the brain and body just like our natural neuropeptides would. These include things such as high fructose corn syrup, trans fats, artificial flavors, artificial colors, artificial sweeteners, MSG, and many other preservatives.

Just as heroin fits in the same opiate site as our natural endorphins, so can these toxic food chemicals unlock receptor sites in our brains, that allow for certain behaviors. So once again, our Mom's were right. We are what we eat. Or more appropriately, "We express what we eat."

How about you? Have you started to read labels on your foods? One way you can eliminate this worry from your plate is shifting towards a whole foods, plant based diet. The easiest way I transitioned this way was to shop the grocery store perimeter. Typically this is where the whole foods are and the processed foods and artificial chemicals are kept to the inside aisles.
