How do I go from "diet" mentality to "sustainable" mentality?

Updated: Aug 3, 2023

"Diet" it is everywhere these days. But how do you feel when you see or hear it?

If you are here, my guess is the word "diet" doesn't invoke happy feelings for you. And you are looking for something more long-term, sustainable that works for you. Something that brings you joy.

Me too!

I'm sure you know this already, but its worth saying again. Diets don't work.

In fact they have a track record of actually making things worse. Yes you lose the weight. Sometimes really quickly. You are loving your results so you stop the diet. And then what happens?

All your hard earned results disappear, and worse extra pounds find their way onto your hips or midsection!

Yeah. No-go!

So if I don't want to diet, then how do I have energy to play with my kids now? How can I make sure I'm around to see my kids graduate high school, get married, have kids? How do I make sure I'm healthy and have the energy to play with my grandkids?

I'm glad you asked.

What social media wants you to believe is you need quick fixes. I'm here to tell you that going slow is the way to go.

Here are 5 ways you can help switch your thinking from "diet" to "sustainable lifestyle."

  1. Set realistic goals and have a weight management plan. A one-sided approach that only focuses on cutting calories is a difficult plan of action.

  2. Get your body moving for 150 minutes each week, doing something that brings you joy. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn't matter what you do as long as it brings you joy. Can't do 150 minutes? That is ok. Start where you are. The key here is starting.

  3. Practice Intuitive Eating. Where you are consciously aware of the entire eating experience. From food prep to eating, recognize and respect each attribute-hunger cues, satiety, flavor, texture, taste. Respect your body, learn coping mechanisms for emotional eating, and approach nutrition without judgment.

  4. Have a plan for any weight-loss plateaus you may encounter. This can happen for so many reasons and having a plan can help avoid self-sabotaging.

  5. Tap into your support system. Family and friends can help provide encouragement and praise.
