You Are What You Eat

Think about it for a second. What you eat is the only material available for your cells to build new cells. That means you literally become what you eat. And what you eat, eats. That's you. That is what your cells are made of.

This concept really got me thinking about what I'm putting into and onto my body. But more importantly, what I'm deciding my kids eat too.

In the beginning my son ate everything we put in front of him. Veggies of all kinds, fruits, and even liver. It was easy. I thought, "Man, I really got this mothering thing down pat." LOL! Then reality slapped me in the face. He became super picky about what he wanted to eat. And the only thing on the list was candy, cookies, cake, or ice cream. It was cute in the beginning. Haha! He knows what candy is now and asks for it by name. Oh, so cute!

But then he seriously wouldn't eat anything we put out for meals. Nothing. Not even things he'd ask for like peanut butter toast. I'd go through the effort of making it and getting the table set and everything ready. And he would only play with the food, then throw it to the dogs.

I'd clean everything up, get him playing and he'd come back in about an hour saying he was hungry. I would make some snacks and the same thing would happen. This went on for so long that I contemplated just giving him the junk food, just to see him eat something. Anything! And there were days where I wouldn't pay attention enough to realize he hadn't eaten any of the meals, and at the end of the day it'd hit me. All he ate today was two desserts! I felt like mom-failure over here.

It matters what we eat. Without the right nutrients, our brain doesn't have the right building blocks to build new brain cells. Same with our heart. Same with our liver. Same with every body system.

A 1992 study (nearly 30 years ago now!) found that most children and teenagers had the beginning of fatty plaques in their arteries already!! Already!! There is also considerable data suggesting childhood diets have a greater impact on getting certain cancers later in life. Think about that. The food choices we are making today, can set the stage for suffering later. No Mama wants to think about that.

Mama's are also busy these days. So it's my mission to create recipes, and systems that makes meal times easier and with less effort. Share them with you. Quick meals that can be thrown together in 30 minutes or less. That taste good. That kids eat. That sets them up to live out their potential on this earth. Because God knows we need each and every one to be their best these days.

Save you time and add more joy to your meal times. Now that is something I can cheers to!
