Are You Focusing on the Wrong Thing?

Updated: Aug 7, 2023

After their coaching sessions are done, many of my clients have mentioned that they feel more empowered. More empowered to use their voice, to plan their meals, to set those boundaries they've always dreamt of, to....fill in the blank.

Some may think this is by chance, but the truth of it is, empowerment is built into coaching. It is in sewn into the very fabric of the sessions.

One skill coaches have for empowering their clients is shining a light on their strengths. Even though we all have strengths, typically people are only minimally aware of what they are.

Pop Quiz: List your top 5 strengths...kind of hard, right? I bet if I asked you to list your weaknesses the answers would come to mind a lot faster.

There is nothing wrong with you if your answers came at a slower pace, this is just how most of us have been programed in our society, workplaces, childhoods, and/or schools.

Sometimes its even impossible to talk about our strengths because we don't even know what they are, or we feel arrogant talking about them.

The key here is: What you focus on expands.

This is why coaching approaches strengths and weaknesses completely different. As a coach, I want my clients to not only recognize and be able to articulate their strengths, I want them to fully embrace them! We focus on our strengths.

Think back about the pop quiz above. When you were thinking about your strengths and things you do well, I bet that felt good. Now remember how you felt when you thought about your weaknesses. Dread, am I right?

Yes, so what would you rather focus on?

"Growing my strengths"-Yes!

And then use them to build a new skill, get creative, step into your potential that you've had all along.

Once you know your strengths you can start asking yourself:

Where and how do I want to start using my strengths?

What new behaviors or skills do I want to learn?

And tackle those challenges and goals with the least amount of resistance.
